Maya Elious on Using Your Message to Build a Business that Makes an Impact

Everyone tells you to find your purpose, but where do you look and how do you do that? And how do you make sure that the content youโ€™re creating is in line with that purpose? In this episode, branding strategist and coach Maya Elious is giving us her advice on how to find what works for you and why mastering your message to the world is so important to being successful.

Her Entrepreneur Journey

Maya started making money professionally in 2008 by creating custom MySpace pages and custom club flyers. She even did a little photography for nightlife events. As a โ€˜90โ€™s kid, sheโ€™s always been interested and excited about creating things online, and when she started branding MySpace pages, she didnโ€™t even fully realize thatโ€™s what branding was.

She started creating a custom MySpace page for herself before working with an agency creating these custom pages for some models and reality TV stars. Her branding career evolved into website and brand design, and now sheโ€™s a brand strategist and coach who works with women to find their purpose and launch high-ticket products and services.

What does mastering your message mean and why is it important?

I realized when working as a website designer that Iโ€™d ask my clients to send me their content - their photos, their about page, etc. - and they didnโ€™t know what to send or theyโ€™d send it and it didnโ€™t make sense. Iโ€™d built these great sites for clients and then a year or so later the site would be down and theyโ€™d be out of business.

Just because you have a site doesnโ€™t mean you can get people to it, and then that doesnโ€™t mean you can get them to buy. Weโ€™ve all heard the saying โ€œbuild it and theyโ€™ll come,โ€ but what about after that? For me, it became about teaching my clients how to actually convert their audience to clients and create a message that sells.

How do you think our story influences the message we have and the content we create?

Our story is so important to pay attention to. A lot of us downplay our own experiences, so when we try to think back to it, we really skip over the experiences and the things that would really resonate with other people. Think about whatโ€™s meaningful from you - even if it seems little, people just want to know your story and see who they can connect with. The things that may seem insignificant to you are whatโ€™s going to make the biggest impact on your audience.

Whatโ€™s the first step to finding your purpose and turning it into a business that actually makes an impact?

The first step in finding your purpose is to make sure that youโ€™re consistently doing the work and continuing to have fun without really putting any pressure on yourself.

Itโ€™s hard for people to find their purpose when all theyโ€™re focused on is finding their purpose.

Itโ€™s easier to find your purpose when youโ€™re doing what feels right to you and youโ€™re serving other people in the process. If you just do whatโ€™s right for your and focus on serving people well then youโ€™ll find the right fit. How your purpose presents itself and how it applies to your business will evolve over time, but as long as youโ€™re being intentional and enjoying it, itโ€™ll always follow along with what you were meant to do.

How can we make sure weโ€™re producing content thatโ€™s in line with our message and purpose?

Just be intentional with the conversations that youโ€™re having with your community. We get concerned about our engagement, but you have to ask if youโ€™re saying anything thatโ€™s worth engaging on. You have to be relatable. When youโ€™re creating content, you always have to think about who youโ€™re talking to. You need to actually know that person. If youโ€™re struggling to create content, itโ€™s because youโ€™re not consistently having conversations with the people in your community.
