Rachel Green on How to Create a Balanced, Intentional Life

In order to do anything well we have to be intentional about how we do it, and we have to find a work-life balance to avoid burning out and making decisions that aren’t helping us reach our goals. As the owner of Intentionally Designed, Rachel Green is a strategist and designer who gives women the freedom to live a more intentional life that is supported by their business, instead of burdened by it. She is an expert at building a business that’s intentional and finding the balance to make it sustainable and enjoyable, and she’s giving us her insight on how to implement those strategies.

Her Entrepreneur Journey

Before she started her business, Rachel worked for a company doing website and brand design. She ended up starting her business as a stationery designer in 2012 after working for a company doing branding and website design. Her business started out as more of a hobby, but she ended up offering her skills in branding and website design, before adding strategy services.

Rachel truly believes that if we set our businesses up the right way and look at things the right way that we can have successful businesses that actually support our lives instead of burdening them. After starting her business, Rachel went through that journey personally in own life and business, and although there wasn’t an “A-ha!” moment, she ultimately became passionate about helping other women through that journey to run intentional businesses.

What does having an intentional business actually look like?

Building an intentional business means that you’re doing things on purpose and that you have a reason for everything you do. It means you don’t just do what everyone else does or do anything just because you see it working for someone else. When you’re trying to be intentional, you get down to the core of your business and what is really going to work well for you, and you focus on that and on finding out where exactly you want your business to go.

Do you think creating an intentional business carries over into your personal life?

Absolutely! It starts with mindset. Once you’re in a mindset of intention and putting purpose behind everything that you do, it becomes a second nature, no matter if it’s your life or your business. The more you do it the less you’ll have to actually think about it. When you start to run your business with intention and truly think about why you’re choosing to do things, you’ll start to live your life that same way too.

Do you have any practices for someone to get started with being intentional?

Of course! The first thing you need to do is get rid of the distractions. Think of it like the “shiny object syndrome.” Whether it’s your business or your life, get rid of the things that are taking your focus away from the things you really need to be working on. Also, download the (free) Intentional Business Starter Kit to help you take the first steps toward intention.

We try to find balance to avoid burnout, but what does burnout actually look like?

You just feel very tired. You don’t want to do it anymore, you’re overworking yourself and trying to force things, and you just don’t enjoy what you do anymore. Balance is a huge part of being intentional. A lot of people feel like balance doesn’t exist, but it really does, but it exists more in seasons instead of day-to-day.

You have to find out what balance looks like for you.

We have to be more careful about balancing seasons of work and life in order to avoid the burnout. The biggest thing is to not think of balance as a 50/50 kind of thing. It will never be equally balanced, so you just have to look at it over a longer period of time.
