Her Entrepreneur Journey

Amanda grew up in rural Wisconsin and grew up on the internet. She’s always had a deep love for people and loves that social media allows her to stay connected to people all over the world. In 2016, she recognized that brands and businesses were using social media in ways that it was wasn’t originally meant for, and that led her to create the mission #KeepSocialMediaSocial along with her agency, McLernon and Co., because she wanted to help heal social media.

She wanted social media to be the happy place for people that it used to be, which is why she has spent the last 4 years working with brands, businesses, and individuals to have a better relationship with social media and realize that taking a mindful approach to building their community will lead to more profit and support.

Why is mindfulness on social media so important?

So many of us are lucky to have grown up with the internet and social media, and have a great relationship with it, but the world we live in is turning it into nothing but business and sales and trying to make more money. When you’re mindful about your social channels, about each post, and about the way you interact on the platforms, you’re going to build more relationships and more of a community that supports you and brings in profit.

These tools are amazing but they’re meant to be tools, and we’ll have so much more success if we use them to connect with community.

We need to get back to the intentional place of wanting to connect and build relationships, instead of thinking we have to be on social media just to keep our business going.

How does our ego play a role?

You have two voices in your head, you have your monkey mind, which is where your ego comes from, and you have your true stream of consciousness. Ego is really interesting in social media because we constantly use it to focus on what WE want. I want more sales. I want more followers. I want to look authentic on the platform. I, I, I, me, me, me. If we can let our ego go and then look at social media, we realize that it isn’t just about how we show up. We need to remember that there are other people on social media with passions, missions, and energy, and when we do that we can start to use social media as an opportunity to connect.

What steps can we take to repair our social media lives?

The first big thing is understanding that you need to have boundaries. You have boundaries with all the other things and people and relationships in your life, so you have to have boundaries with social media. Part of that is watching how you speak about social media and your relationship with it, and rewriting any limiting beliefs that you have about it by coming from a place of gratitude.

Then you need to check in with yourself and build new habits. Do a digital detox by checking in on an Emotional Guidance Scale and set boundaries for yourself that if you’re feeling under a certain number, you won’t create content or scroll through social media. That way, you’re only creating and consuming content when you’re in a positive head space.
